A Scrambled Mix of Humor, Tech & Life Over Easy

I picked up the Acer Aspire 5750-6677 notebook computer at Costco today, and it seems like a nice notebook computer after using it for a few hours. Here’s what I thing of the laptop in the first few hours of use:

  • Build quality: Overall, I think the quality is great. There is almost no keyboard flex, and and the lid of the laptop is more solid than that of a MacBook (some of the highest quality notebooks ever made). It feels very solid, and I think it could take a beating yet still stay working.
  • Touchpad: This is by far the worst touch pad I have ever used. It is absolutely atrocious. I strongly dislike touchpads to begin with, but this one is awful. Your finger has to be almost completely flat for it to work, and it’s nothing like any other trackpad I’ve ever used.
  • Webcam: Acer claims that the webcam included in this PC is HD. The software that Acer included to use the camera isn’t perfect, but the camera works fine in Skype and Gmail video chat.
  • Speakers: If you’ve ever used a laptop, you’ll probably know that most laptop speakers are terrible. These are surprisingly good.
  • HDMI: This computer features an HDMI port, allowing you to easily connect it to a large television. I’ve tried it out, and it works fine.
  • USB Ports: I love USB ports. On my primary desktop PC, I’ve run out, even with two USB hubs. Like most laptops, this PC has three USB ports. Two are USB 2.0, one is USB 3.0 (next generation of USB- much, much faster).
  • Microphone: One word- awful. I will be using an external one for sure.
  • Battery Life: One thing most people look for in laptops is battery life. The six cell battery in the 5750-6677 is good, but not great. It lasts for about 3 hours.

Specs: 2.1 GHz Intel Core i3-2310M processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, 1.3MP webcam, 15.6 inch widescreen display (1366 x 7368), Supermulti disk drive, 802.11 b/g/n wireless

Overall, this laptop is great. Windows 7 works flawlessly, and it seems pretty solid. As of now, I definitely recommend it to anybody. Look for a full review soon!

The TechOmelette purchased his Acer 5750-6677 at Costco. If you’re not a Costco member, you can purchase a similar Acer model at Amazon.com. The two models here are extremely similar and just as powerful.

I just bought an ACER ASPIRE 5750-6677 from COSTCO and though the catalogue shows bluetooth I cannot find this facility on the laptop anywhere. Tried through all system search but cannot find bluetooth facility. Will appreciate if you will confirm whether this model really has bluetooth facility or otherwise. Thanks. Murtaza.

This laptop does not have Bluetooth. If you want to use Bluetooth, I would recommend the one available here: http://goo.gl/wCdWG

my hp pavillion dv6 2155 dx doesn’t have Bluetooth, either

Can you tell me the name of the program for the webcam? I can’t seem to find it.

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

If you press the start orb (bottom left corner of the task bar), you can search for a program. Search for “Acer Crystal Eye Webcam.” Thanks for visiting the site!

Does this Acer AS5750-6677 have a DVD drive that both reads and writes, or just write? Also, anyone know how it compares to the HP dv6-6013cl which Costco sells at about the same price (which one is better)?

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

The Acer Aspire AS 5750-6677 has a DVD drive that writes and reads DVDs and CDs. Most modern computers are like this. The HP at Costco has almost exactly the same specs (same processor, RAM, and hard drive). While the HP is made of metal, I would take an Acer over an HP any day. I’ve had a very bad experience with HP, and I do not recommend their consumer products. HP ships all computers full of bloatware (useless software that bloats the system). While the Acer had some, HPs have much more. One of the ARoundEgg.com PCs in an HP desktop, and I’ve had to tear it open to replace the hard drive. Afterwards, re-installing Windows from HPs restore disks was a total pain. I would stay away from HP.

Thank you for the review. I tried to buy this yesterday evening at a local Costco, only to find out when they went to get it that it wasn’t in stock (anyone who’s worked in retail knows how “in stock” means “only if you can touch it”). After spending today reviewing other options, although there are some similar ones out there (Lenovo E520 http://www.buy.com/listing/sellerlistings.asp?sku=221166919&buy=1)considering the iffy retailers, I still think I’ll go with this Acer and Costco’s two year warranty etc.

Hi, I bought the Acer 5750-6677 from Costco as well, and I’ve installed a Logitech Wireless Mouse. However, now my regular trackpad does not work — I cannot move the pointer unless I use my wireless mouse. The Synaptics Pointing Device icon shows a check mark next to “Tap to Click” so I don’t know why the trackpad does not work. I am not a techie, so would you have the patience to explain step by step on how can I fix it so that I can use both the trackpad and the wireless mouse simultaneously? Thanks!

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

Try pressing the fn key and the f7 key at the same time. This should re-enable the trackpad.

  • bethany

OMG, you are a GENIUS! It worked, thank you so so SO MUCH!

No problem! Glad I was able to help!

Thinking about purchasing this Acer, Is it good for gaming and also does it have the software to edit pictures and videos?

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

I had a bad experience with this Acer (I’m going to post something about it very soon), and ended up returning it. I think I just had a lemon. To answer your questions, it is okay for gaming, not great. It does not have photo editing software preinstalled. I would reccommend GIMP, Paint.NET, and Picasa (all free) for photo editing. For video editing, it comes with Windows Live Movie Maker. It’s good for basics. For anything more advanced, I’d recommend Adobe Premiere Elements ($99).

I just bought 3 of them, I love the trackpads on the ones i bought, 1 for my father who does nothing but web browse, and watch movies, friend who does same and i will be using this for college. I dont think i can go wrong, only had them for 2 days but I hope they dont go wrong, what is the issue you experienced techegg?

        • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

I had a bad VGA port (the port where you plug an external monitor/projector in). The external monitor I had plugged in had vertical lines across it. I tried three monitors, proving that it was a bad VGA port.

i just purchased the acer aspire 5750-6677 at costco for $399.97. what a deal! an intel i3 2nd gen with 4gb ddr3 mem and 500gb hdd – u can’t beat it! i luckily got the last one ( besides floor model ) at my store. if anyone needs a laptop, i highly suggest purchasing this from costco. i’ve seen the same laptop with a smaller hard drive ( 320 gb ) for $80 more.

    • Eggie

Really great deal! Hope you have good luck with yours. Costco’s return policy & warranty is good, so that should help if you have any problems like I did. – TechOmelette

I bought mine last week at Costco and love it! I am having no trouble with the track pad at all. I still cannot believe how great a price it was.

  • santosh

i recently bought aspire 5750-6677 from the u.s.a. and now i’m in nepal. i partitioned my computer drive from the inbuilt system (through my control panel)into 2 volumes and was fine till today morning when it said “BOOTMGR MISSING PRESS CTRL ALT DELETE TO RESTART” and now my computer fails to boot. can i get any solutions? i dont have any dvd’s provided by the company. but i’ve made a copy of my system recovery. are there any other options than using the recovery discs to revover my system coz i’ve installed many new softwares and also have many important files that i cant afford to lose.. please help me…..
    thanking you
    sincerely yours

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

You might be out of luck. BOOTMGR is pretty important. You could bring it to a good computer shop and they could easily pull your data off of it for you, but you’ll have to do a restore. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help!

  • olumide

i just got an aspire 5750 core i7 but i cant find my recovery disk. any ideas please?

    • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

You can burn some new ones by going to the Acer Recovery Manager in the start menu. It’ll take 3-4 DVDs.

      • olumide

Its not like i lost the old one. i just got a new laptop and cld not find the recovery partition from the very beginning. but in the disk manager shows a health recovery partition of 15GB that is empty which i cant view in the my computer environment.

        any clue?

        thanks

        • http://tech.aroundegg.com TechEgg

That recovery partition is probably full of hidden files. To check that there’s something there, follow these steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Show-hidden-files

Then, check the recovery partition and see if files load. When you’re done, make sure you change it back so you don’t accidentally delete a previously-hidden system file.

  • Mrharry99

how do I access the webcam software to capture pictures? Skype works well but I can not find general software on the unit. Can you please direct me?

    • Anonymous

I returned the laptop due to a problem with the motherboard/graphics, but if i remember right, it’s called “Acer Crystal Eye Webcam.” Search for that in the Windows 7 start menu.
